United States government declared the frontier closed in 1890
Angelica Minissale
What was the frontier?
  • The frontier was 6 states (some territories at the time) that stretched from north to south and were located at the “front line”. The states were North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas.

Why was it closed?
  • The United States government declared the frontier closed in 1890 because they felt that there was no longer a clear line of advancement. Towns and cities grew along with the farming areas and industrial centers, the area was now considered settled.
Environmental issues
  • Once the land was considered “settled” more people started to come there. As more people came the more the land and resources were used. They pushed the Native American people (people who knew how to live off the land and save as many resources as possible) off the land.
