John Muir (by Kiki Lake) was an important naturalist in American cultural. He created the preservationist philosophy of setting aside the forests and national parks around California . Muir was living in the United States when he had an accident at work. He was using a sharp tool that slipped and poked him in the eye. This caused him to go blind for some time. When he re-gained his sight he had a new purpose for his life which was to study plants.

"This affliction has driven me to the sweet fields. God has to nearly kill us sometimes, to teach us lessons."- John Muir

After his acident Muir travels from Indiana to Florida, a 1,000 mile walk. From there he sailed to NY and then took a trip to California. Arrived in California then took a week long visit to Yosemite
*loved the view and the landscape
*Built a home there himself and lived there for over three years
1889- Muir Gained his preservation role once he discovered domestic animals were damaging the land. He got people to notice as well such as Robert Underwood Johnson who had connections to create a bill that would make Yosemite into a national park.
1890- Congress Passes the bill that would make Yosemite left to the state but they took into some of the idea Muir had about preservation.1892 – Muir became president of the Sierra Club, which was created to protect the nature of the enviornment.
